Westgate Co-Operative Building, East Ayrshire
Several attempts had been made to find a viable scheme to restore the B listed Victorian Co-operative building in Newmilns.
But until the success of East Ayrshire Council in securing a Townscape Heritage Initiative scheme in 2000 a funding gap prevented work on this important building in the Newmilns Conservation Area. Working with the Council and Shire Housing Association, SBPT restored the building and converted it into 19 self contained flats.
The project relied on a range of funding from the Architectural Heritage Fund, the Empty Homes Initiative, Historic Scotland and the Newmilns THI.
Work commenced in January 2002 and the building was handed over to Shire Housing Association on 11 March 2003. The overall project value was just under £1.5 million with the building returned to a valuable use and restored as a key landmark in the town.
