Dunure Castle
SBPT purchased this Scheduled Ancient Monument from the National Trust for Scotland and undertook consolidation works in 1996 – 97. The castle was in imminent danger of collapse into the Firth of Clyde so a major part of the project involved the stabilisation of the cliff face and building.

Other works included the rebuilding of the dovecot and an archaeological dig to excavate the former kitchens and other areas of the castle. The quantity of mediaeval glass discovered during excavations doubled Scotland’s store of glass of this age.
Once
the building was stable, SBPT constructed walkways and public viewing
areas and provided site interpretation boards before selling the
building back to the National Trust for Scotland. The project was
undertaken in 2 phases, totalling £370,000 with funding from Kyle and
Carrick Council, South Ayrshire Council, Historic Scotland, the HLF,
Enterprise Ayrshire and Landtrust.
