Current Projects

The Old School, Campbeltown

Practical Completion has been achieved and it is hoped that the first visitors will be staying at the Bunkhouse at the end of April.

The recent Open Day saw hundreds of visitors admire the transformation to Bunkhouse.

Completed Bunkhouse April 2012

Work undertaken to date:

  • New access created on Big Kiln St.
  • Building cleared out, roof removed and walls stripped; rear wallhead taken down to lintel height and rebuilt.
  • Stonework: joints raked out; rear wallhead taken down to lintel height and rebuilt; skew stones being re-bedded at gables; sample of repointing  approved   and stone selected for stone repairs; repointing is underway.
  • New floor slab laid.
  • The main roof is complete. Approximately 60% of the slates have been reclaimed from the building with the remainder recycled from a local house and providing an excellent match. The front porch roof is now complete also.
  • Stone repairs and re-pointing are well underway with most stone indents now in place.
  • Repairs to chimney stacks are complete.  It's been necessary to replace some stones in the first stack to be repaired, the replacements have been cut from one of the coping stones removed to form the new access. Chimnet cans have been retained where they were in place but as there are none shown in the McGrory photograph of 1909, we have left the fourth, blind chimney without a can. (see photograph below)
  • The extension is framed and blocked out with the zinc roof covering installed.
  • All the window framed have been installed in the original building with double glazing units fitted to the rear clerestory. With the original building now weathertight, internal fixtures and finishes are being installed.
  • External works including drainage, paving and finishing the new access are underway.
