New Lanark Church

SBPT was commissioned by the New Lanark Trust into prepare an Options Appraisal for the category A listed Church at New Lanark. The building is de-consecrated and has for some years been in use as a Village Hall. While the building has generally been well maintained, it is suffering a degree of disrepair and requires a significant investment at this time to prevent further deterioration. To justify this in economic terms and to secure the future of the building, a new income generating use needs to be found.
As part of the Options Appraisal SBPT prepared a condition survey, schematic floor plans and a repair schedule to allow estimated costs for repairs. SBPT consulted with local people, businesses and the South Lanarkshire Council and looked at a number of possible options including an updated village hall, mixed community and commercial space, World Heritage Resource Centre and short term holiday lets. Following outline an development appraisal of the options it was clear that the Short term Holiday lets was the preferred option. This use was shown to be highly complementary to the building and the World Heritage Site, continuing on the success of similar short lets run by the New Lanark Mill Hotel.
SBPT has encouraged the New Lanark Trust to look in more detail at the surrounding slope and work with an engineer to establish the perceived instability of the slope and the surrounding retaining walls. The work that will be required on this slope may be a deciding factor in the future of this project.

We continue to work with New Lanark Trust in an advisory capacity and will strive to help them funding to reuse this highly significant building for the benefit of the World Heritage Site.
